Buying American: How We Are Designing Beautiful Kitchens Without the Tariff Headache
There is a conversation I have been having with almost every client lately. It usually starts somewhere around the material selections phase, when we sit down to talk about tile or cabinetry or fixtures, and someone asks the question that is on everyone's mind right now: is all of this going to cost more because of the tariffs?
The honest answer is that it depends on where the materials come from. And that conversation has pushed me to take a harder look at what we are sourcing domestically, and what I have found has genuinely surprised me. Not because American-made materials are a compromise. But because in a lot of cases they are better.
Here is what I mean.
Tile that has a point of view
For years, a lot of the most interesting tile came from Italy or Spain. And some of it still does. But Fireclay Tile, made in California, has been producing handmade ceramic and glass tile that holds its own against anything imported. The color range is deep, the quality is consistent, and there is something I appreciate about specifying a material that was made two hours up the coast. Heath Ceramics out of San Francisco is another one I keep coming back to. If you know Heath, you already know why.
Hardware that actually means something
Hardware is one of those categories where the details really do make the room. Rocky Mountain Hardware out of Idaho does hand-forged bronze and brass pieces that age beautifully and feel completely different from the cast hardware you find everywhere else. And Emtek, which is actually based right here in Los Angeles, makes a range of lever and cabinet hardware that gives you that considered, custom feel without the lead time that comes with importing.
Cabinetry built to last
American cabinetry has come a long way. Brands like Dura Supreme out of Minnesota and Wellborn Cabinet out of Alabama are doing serious work, with real customization options and quality that I am comfortable standing behind. These are not the flat-pack, figure-it-out-yourself options. These are proper cabinets made by people who take them seriously.
Fixtures and plumbing with staying power
Newport Brass is another California company worth knowing. Their kitchen faucets and fixtures have a clean, refined look that works across a lot of different design directions, and they are widely available through kitchen and bath showrooms across Southern California. For clients who want something a bit more design-forward, Waterworks out of Connecticut consistently delivers.
What this means for your kitchen project right now
If you are planning a kitchen remodel and you are nervous about timelines or costs shifting under you, the good news is that a domestically sourced kitchen can be just as beautiful, often faster to get, and in many cases more interesting than what you would have designed around imported materials a few years ago.
The tariff situation has pushed me to get more specific and more intentional about sourcing, and honestly that has made the work better. It has made me look harder at what is being made here and realize how much of it deserves to be in more homes.
If you are thinking about a kitchen remodel in Long Beach, Los Angeles or anywhere across Southern California, I would love to talk through what is possible. The first conversation is always free.
